Geschiedenis
De eerste joden die zich rond 1750 op Voorne-Putten vestigden woonden in Geervliet, Heenvliet, Zuidland, Zwartewaal, Hellevoetsluis en Brielle. De kleine joodse gemeente die zij met elkaar vormden kwam samen in een klein privé-huisje in Geervliet, terwijl er godsdienstonderwijs gegeven werd in het achterste deel van het armenhuisje in Heenvliet.
De joodse begraafplaats dateert uit 1781 en ligt aan de Spuikade in Geervliet. Deze werd in de negentiende eeuw diverse keren uitgebreid. In 1940 vond er de laatste begrafenis plaats. In 1807 werd de eerste synagoge, aan de Kerkweg in Heenvliet, in gebruik genomen. Er wonen dan zo'n 135 joden op Voorne-Putten. Vanwege de grote afstanden op het eiland en wat onenigheid tussen de leden, maakten Brielle en Hellevoetsluis zich in 1809 los van de joodse gemeente Heenvliet. Omdat de gemeente Heenvliet net daarvoor tot de aankoop en verbouwing van de synagoge was overgegaan bleef deze in financiële moeilijkheden achter. In 1865 diende de joodse gemeente een verzoek in bij de overheid tot geldelijke steun voor het behoud van de synagoge en de begraafplaats. Zo kon de synagoge in 1867 gerestaureerd worden, maar voor de begraafplaats was geen geld beschikbaar. In 1887 maakte ook Zuidland zich los van de joodse gemeente Heenvliet.
