Geschiedenis

Nadat in 1922 de nieuwe kerk gereed kwam werd de oude kerk aan de eredienst onttrokken. Bij een restauratie door architect F.P.J. Peutz in de jaren 50 werd de middeleeuwse kerk blootgelegd door een aantal aanbouwen te verwijderen. Tijdens de volgende restauratie tussen 1977 en 1984 werden in het koor muurschilderingen aangetroffen, de oudste muurschilderingen die ooit in een dorpskerk in Nederland zijn gevonden. Deze schilderingen van rond 1300 zijn nu ook nog te bezichtigen. Ook is in dit kerkje een geelkoperen doosje gevonden met stukjes bot van de heilige Salvius, waarnaar deze kerkgemeenschap is vernoemd. Deze botjes zouden door twee nonnen uit Frankrijk zijn meegenomen naar Limbricht.

Monumentomschrijving Rijksdienst

VOORMALIGE PAROCHIEKERK. Tweebeukig schip met een gedeeltelijk uit veldstenen opgetrokken hoofdbeuk, XI of XII, en een laatgotische zuidbeuk, grotendeels van mergel; beide beuken met trapgevels van baksteen, 1651. Laatromaans koor van mergel, XIII, tegen de hoofdbeuk. Tegen de zuidbeuk een westtoren van mergel van omstreeks 1500. Orgel van ca. 1700, in Rijnlandse stijl, gemaakt door Johann Jakob Brammertz. In 1803 door Joseph Binvignat vanuit het klooster op de Agnetenberg te Sittard overgeplaatst. Bij de restauratie/reconstructie door Verschueren in 1989 is het pijpwerk, waarvan niets bewaard was gebleven, in stijl bijgemaakt. In de zuidmuur van het koor is waarschijnlijk een zonnewijzer ingekrast.
